A List Stud are the new kids on the Easter block but there is a wealth of experience behind the Benalla based farm who have been building up an impressive bloodstock portfolio.
Bluebloods had a chat with manager Codie O’Neill who has been working with thoroughbreds for several years having grown up with stock horses and cutting horses, also spending time in the United States working with quarter horses.
A List’s select group of Easter yearlings are bound to be of great appeal to buyers…
Lot 19 bay/brown colt by Brazen Beau from Laughen Hard (by All Too Hard): there are 48 winners of 68 races in his Group One winning sire’s first two crops, the best still to come and he is the clear leading sire of stakes winners among Australian second crop sires! This fellow is the first foal for a daughter of the Tommy Smith Slipper-Listed, 1200m winner How Funny (a game second in the Golden Slipper Stakes-Gr.1, 1200m won by Polar Success), also dam of the speedy dual Listed winner Jester’s Girl, in turn dam of the Canberra Guineas-Listed, 1400m winner Assimilate who was recently successful at Sha Tin. Brazen Beau has sired stakes performers out of mares with Danehill, Rory’s Jester and Sir Tristram, all three of whom are an influence in Laughen Hard’s pedigree; and he is also the sire of a European stakes winner line-bred to Green Desert as is this colt 4mx5m.
“He is a strong colt with great forearm and a powerful hindquarter,” O’Neill said.
Lot 418 bay colt by Exceed And Excel from Duhallow (by Denman): by one of Australia’s most popular and prolific stallions whose progeny are always popular at Easter, he is the first foal for a consistent race mare who won two races, also finishing in the placings on seven occasions from 14 starts. A 3/4 brother to the Listed winning speedster Sabie, his grandam is the dual city winning Snippets mare Rondavel, dam of three stakes performers and daughter of the Debutant Stakes-Gr.3, 900m winner Lusso. This is a fast, early maturing family and this colt is bred along proven lines with the Exceed And Excel/Lonhro combination producing ten stakes winners whilst the Exceed And Excel/Snippets cross (one which provides for a cross of the terrific mare Striking) has produced a Golden Slipper Stakes-Gr.1, 1200m winner in Overreach.
“He is typical of his sire, a horse with good bone, and strong shoulder; he looks like he will run.”
Lot 448 bay filly by Exceed And Excel from Flash Of Innocence (by Lonhro): of the 28 runners by the great Exceed And Excel out of mares by the superstar Lonhro, 22 (an impressive 78.5%) are winners including the Group Three winners Manicure and Resin. This filly is a 3/4 sister to the Hong Kong Champion Griffin Amber Sky, a Group One winner in Hong Kong and Dubai. Her dam is a lightly raced Gosford winner whilst her grandam is the Champagne Stakes-Gr.2, 1200m winner Truly Wicked from the family of tough stakes winners Ticket To Rome, Shigeru Sendan and Great Delight. Descendant of the influential mare Schiaparelli, also ancestress of Last Tycoon and Celtic Swing.
“She is a well related, great walking filly with strength and a great attitude.”
Lot 447 chestnut colt by Sebring from Gwenella (by Authorized): hailing from the penultimate crop of a Golden Slipper Stakes-Gr.1, 1200m winning high class sire of 57 stakes winners, he is the second foal (the first being a Frankel colt) for an imported half-sister to the Queensland Oaks-Gr.1 2400m heroine Allow. A member of an outstanding northern hemisphere family, he can boast amongst his relations the big race winners Fragrant Mix, Alpine Rose, Caucasus, One For All, Run The Gantlet, Dance Of Life and Quill (the US Champion 2Y0 Filly who is Gwenella’s fifth dam). His pedigree brings together the influential close relations Halo (4mx5f), Northern Dancer (five strains via Northern Sea, Danzig, Fanfreluche, Sadler’s Wells and Lyphard), Danehill and Machiavellian, providing for multiple crosses of the great mares Natalma and Almahmoud.
“He is a very forward, great moving colt with scope and athleticism.”
Such a classy group of youngsters is bound to be well received at Easter, ensuring that it will not take long for A List Stud to become familiar to buyers. And not long also until we see their brand in the winner’s circle. ©
