The exploits of bona fide Gr1 winners Trapeze Artist, Youngstar, Funstar and Media Award are frequently used to illustrate the level of success Bowness Stud graduates have achieved in recent seasons, but maybe the feats of a very modest purchase subsequently raced as Another One are more appropriate when discussing the potential of the outfit’s draft on offer at the 2023 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale in February.
Purchased for just $18,000, Another One’s earnings now stand at over $830,000 after
a steady stream of consistent performances for the Gary Colvin stable, highlighted by victory in the $500,000 Country Championships Final at Randwick last April.
“The Highway and Midway events are now very much a fixture on Saturday metropolitan programs in Sydney and Zaru is the latest in a solid line of winners associated with Bowness. The likes of Noble Boy (earnings over $760,000), Bon Amis ($595,780), Inanup ($400,890) and Don’t Give a Damn ($556,745) were all bred – and in some cases raced – by clients of the stud, so our Classic drafts are a great fit for the traditional Inglis Classic Yearling Sale buying bench,” said stud manager James Daly.
Gr2 Herbert Power winner Chapada, a Gr1 VRC Derby placed 3-year-old and triple Caulfield Cup starter, arguably holds pride of place as a Classic graduate, turning his $32,000 purchase price into $1.2 million in total earnings.
“Your success is our success – without it we don’t have a business” is the philosophy adopted by Bowness Stud and in 2023, they are banking on their exciting first season sire D’Argento to continue their sustained level of achievement in more recent seasons.

D’Argento makes the perfect BOBS sire according to James Daly. “He was an unbeaten two year-old and an elite three year-old, two factors that align closely to the BOBS scheme.” Thrown into group company from then on, he won the Gr1 Rosehill Guineas before running fourth in the Gr1 Doncaster Handicap, while still a three year-old. At four, he was highly competitive, racing only in group company, and placing in the Gr1 Epsom, Gr1 Winx Stakes, and Gr2 Theo Marks.
From a first crop of 104 foals, D’Argento has 11 yearlings catalogued in the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, with eight of them in the Bowness Stud draft. Their three colts are:
Lot 210, whose winning dam has left six winners from as many to race, and is a half-sister to stakes winner Johnny Reb and Power of Pegasus who won 24 races between them.
Lot 635 is a colt out of a young Snitzel mare whose first two foals are recent winners,
so this pedigree is on the move, and this colt is from a strong European family.=
A half-brother to city winner of eight races, Stanley, Lot 764 is out of an imported half-sister to Listed winner Judhoor, dam of group winner Taghleeb, from the family of Champion 3YO Filly Al Bahathri, and Australian fan favourite Red Cadeaux.
With five fillies by D’Argento in their Classic draft, Bowness Stud are giving buyers opportunities to buy into some of their good families.
Listed winner Tio Rossa won on debut at two, going on to win five races including the Listed Strutt Stakes, and her three year-old recently placed at his third start, so there is more upgrades coming for this pedigree. Lot 163’s dam is also the half-sister to stakes winner

The first foal of winning mare Zoffany Rose, Lot 218, comes from a strong winning American family that includes Gr1 placed winner Nevermore.
Lot 497 is a D’Argento filly out of eight-race winner Isador Amore, whose foals to race include a winner of three races, and Brave Star who has placed in Hong Kong in only three starts (at time of printing). This is the family of WS Cox Plate-Gr1 winner Pinker Pinker.
The second foal of winning Not a Single Doubt mare Jay Jay’s Choice, Lot 505, is out of a half-sister to the dam of The Roses-Gr2 winner Vanna Girl and stakes placed winner Plucky Girl, from the family of triple Gr1 winner Naturalism.
The daughter of tough city winning race mare, Bang On (Not a Single Doubt) who won ten races, and whose first foal is a winner, Lot 739 is a filly from the family of Gr1 winner
El Segundo.
Bowness will also offer three yearlings by other commercial stallions including a full sister to six-race winner including one as a two year-old, Better Than Gold, is Lot 199; and this filly by Better Than Ready is the fourth foal of a winning Exceed and Excel mare from the family of Gr1 winner Best of Days.
“Lot 199 is the only Better Than Ready filly in the sale and, as an August foal from an Exceed And Excel mare herself out of a Snippets mare, presents a great opportunity for buyers to get a quick return on their investment through one of the most precocious breeds in the country.”
With a strong draft of yearlings by their first season sire D’Argento, Bowness Stud looks likely to continue their excellent record of producing classy racehorses.
