COMBINE the blood of several “home made” Golden Slipper winners with the genes of leading European and US sires and you have a potent mix indeed, one good enough to produce Golden Slipper winner Capitalist. The first crop yearlings by this Newgate Stud-based sire made up to $750,000 at the recent Gold Coast Magic Millions where they were snapped up by a select group of buyers.
That gave the young son of Written Tycoon-Kitalpha (Fusaichi Pegasus (USA)) an average of $239,706, second only to Triple Crown hero American Pharoah (USA) on the first season sire list by average and made him leader by aggregate. Of greater import though were the buyers of those youngsters and they are in good hands indeed with the likes of Gai Waterhouse/Adrian Bott, Anthony Freedman, Snowden Racing, Edmonds Racing, Kennewell Racing, Mulcaster Bloodstock (for Chris Waller), Dynamic Syndications, Malua Bloodstock, Seamus Mills (for McEvoy Mitchell Racing), China Horse Club/Newgate Racing/Starlight Racing, Sun Bloodstock, Laurel Oak Bloodstock and Dalziel Bloodstock/Peter Moody among those to land winning bids.
James Harron, who found Capitalist at the 2015 MM Gold Coast auction and paid $165,000 for the chestnut who would go on to win more than $3.5m, signed for the top two lots, paying $750,000 for the colt from Listed winner and Group placed Booklet (Tale of the Cat (USA)), a granddaughter of dual Gr.1 winner Spyglass (Sir Sian), dam of Iron Horse, and $600,000 for the colt from Rough Ride (Flying Spur) a winning half-sister to Gr.1 winner Eagle Way. That yearling carries a double of Mr. Prospector and three lines of Danzig, two via Danehill (USA)).
Chinese buyer Zhiqiang An also paid $600,000 for the colt from Cheshire Oaks-LR winner Perfect Truth (IRE) (Galileo (IRE)), already dam of Gr.1 winner Magicool and herself a granddaughter of Gr.1 winner and Gr.1 producer Durtal. Other Capitalist yearlings made $550,000 and $500,000 (x2), a great result for the Newgate Farm sire who stood at $55,000 when these horses were conceived.

Since Todman won that first Golden Slipper back in 1957, Australia’s premier juvenile sprint has proved its reliability as a stallion-maker with horses like Pago Pago, Baguette, Vain, Luskin Star, Marscay, Rory’s Jester, Marauding, Canny Lad, Danzero, Flying Spur, Catbird, Stratum, Sebring, Sepoy and Pierro finding success
as stallions. The 2015 winner Vancouver, 2016 winner Capitalist, 2012 winner Pierro and 2011 winner Sepoy are the only male Slipper winners currently at stud.
Capitalist has a real Golden Slipper pedigree as well, with Marscay, Vain and Luskin Star featuring in his first four generations, while his second dam Compulsion (Danehill (USA)-Bold Promise by Luskin Star) is a sister to 1996 Slipper winner Merlene. Compulsion was no slouch at two either, winning the Blue Diamond Preview-Gr.3 when beating Piccadilly Circus (dam of Fastnet Rock) into second, while Bold Promise was the star filly on the 1990-91 2YO Classifications, winning the Reisling Slipper Trial-Gr.2 and the Magic Millions 2YO Classic-RL before training on at three to win the Tea Rose-Gr.2 and finish second in the Flight Stakes-Gr.1. Bold Promise produced two dual Gr.1 winners, Merlene, who also claimed the AJC Sires’ Produce-Gr.1 after her Slipper triumph, and the VRC Newmarket-Gr.1/MVRC Australia Stakes-Gr.1 heroine Miss Pennymoney.
Capitalist lived up to his physique and pedigree from the time he stepped out on to the track. Peter and Paul Snowden trained the chestnut for a large syndicate put together by James Harron, including Henry Field’s Newgate Stud Farm. He caught the eye early with a two-length Randwick trial win on September 21, 2015 before lining up for the first juvenile test of the season for colts in the Breeders’ Plate-LR (1000m) there on October 3. He looked like a very good colt too, coming from fourth at the 400m to beat Detective by three lengths in 57.09 (34.20) and with a future dual Gr.1 winner in Prized Icon (Champagne Stakes, VRC Derby) finishing third.

Given a break, he tuned up with a four-length Randwick trial win on December 8 before stepping out in the $200,000 Wyong Magic Millions-RL (1100m), beating Niccolance by 2.75 lengths in 1:03.23. He then headed north to the Gold Coast on January 9, 2016 and demolished a strong field in the $2m Magic Millions Two Year-Old Classic-RL (1200m), beating Nikitas by two lengths in 1:09.29, again for regular rider Blake Shinn.
Crossing the line with a pretty smart filly in English when second to her in a Randwick trial (Furnaces third) on February 19, Capitalist suffered his first defeat at his next start, finishing second to Kiss and Make Up in the Todman Stakes-Gr.2 (1200m) at Rosehill on March 5, beaten 2.25 lengths. That shock defeat gave his supporters the chance to get a better price in the Golden Slipper-Gr.1 (1200m) and he didn’t let them down, coming from fifth at the 400m to beat the high-class filly Yankee Rose by a half-length and with Blue Diamond-Gr.1 runner-up Flying Artie third, both placegetters subsequent Gr.1 winners. Flying Artie (Artie Schiller (USA)-Flying Ruby
by Rubiton), winner of the Coolmore (Ascot Vale) Stakes-Gr.1 at three, is also on the Newgate Roster
and also has first crop yearlings this season.
Capitalist ended his juvenile season as the highest earner of 2YO prize money (topping $3.5m) and became the first horse to win the Breeders’ Plate, Magic Millions and Slipper. He warmed up for his first start at three with two trial wins during July, but suffered another defeat when fourth behind Star Turn in the San Domenico-Gr.3 on August 13.
Things again looked on track when he beat That’s a Good Idea and Redzel in a Randwick trial on September 20, before a third placing, 1.5 lengths behind Gr.1 stars Russian Revolution and Astern in the Roman Consul-Gr.3 (1200m) on October 1.
It was to be the colt’s last start as he chipped a fetlock when prepping for the Darley Classic and the decision was made to retire him. Capitalist was never further back than fourth in seven starts, winning four races, running one second, one third and one fourth and earning $3,545,900.
“Capitalist was just the perfect two year-old and was blessed with a huge amount of precocity, ability and an excellent temperament,” Peter Snowden said when the colt was retired. “I am certain that without this injury he would have gone very close in the Darley Classic as his trackwork at Flemington was exceptional.”
“Capitalist was the best two year-old I have ever ridden,” Blake Shinn said. “It was like driving a Rolls Royce in the Breeders’ Plate, he was breathtaking in the Magic Millions and outstanding against a top class field in the Golden Slipper.”
“We were inundated by people wanting to send mares in his first season and have hand-crafted his book to give him every opportunity to be the champion stallion I know he will become and he has been heavily supported by his group of owners,” Newgate Farm managing director Henry Field said. “Australia is all about two year-old racing and Capitalist is the embodiment of what works in Australia.”
Capitalist covered 229 mares in that first book for 164 live foals. He got 223 mares in 2018 (161 foals) and 203 in 2019.
While the roll call of great Australian juveniles in his pedigree alone is enough to predict his success as a stallion, Capitalist’s pedigree embraces these strengths and reinforces it with some high-class imports. These include champion French sire Kenmare (FR), Kentucky Derby hero Fusaichi Pegasus (USA), English Gr.1 sprint winner and nine times Champion Australian Sire Danehill (USA) and English sprint champion and US Breeders’ Cup Mile hero Last Tycoon (IRE). It’s a heady mix indeed.
Jan Clark (Daandine Pastoral Company, Queensland) bred Capitalist when Written Tycoon, a sire she also bred, was at stud in Queensland. Written Tycoon (Iglesia-Party Miss by Kenmare (FR)), who stood at $110,000 in 2019 at Woodside Park Stud in Victoria, retired to stud in 2007 (fee $8250) and was Leading First Season Sire in 2010-11. He now has more than 450 winners (28SW) of $60m, including six Gr.1 winners, the others being Tycoon Tara (Encores), Music Magnate (Danehill Dancer (IRE)), Luna Rossa (More Than Ready (USA), Written By (Tobougg (IRE)) and Booker (Flying Spur). His book has only once dipped below 100 (87 in 2008) in his 13 seasons at stud and rose to a high of 226 in 2016 ($49,500).
He has 1381 live foals from his first 12 seasons and covered 135 mares in 2019.
Written Tycoon was also a pretty smart juvenile, winning over 1100m at Randwick before claiming the STC Todman Slipper Trial-Gr.2 at Rosehill (beating Domesday). His five juvenile starts also included a second to Fashions Afield over 1200m. That filly would go on to run second in the Slipper and win the AJC Sires’ Produce-Gr.1. At three he was runner-up to Media (1.25 lengths) in the San Domenico-Gr.3 (Snitzel third) and in the Listed Canterbury Classic to Crimson Reign and he was a close fifth (of 14) in the Shorts-Gr.3 behind Bentley Biscuit at four.

Written Tycoon’s dam, Party Miss, won four races (1200m) and he is the best of her five winners. She is by Kenmare (Kalamoun-Belle of Ireland by Milesian) a Gr.1 winner and successful sire in France who was imported as an older horse by John Messarra (Arrowfield) and did well here too, the sprint stars and sires Kenvain and Keltrice among his 62 stakes winners. His daughters have produced several Gr.1 winners including Boban and Virage de Fortune. His branch of the Grey Sovereign (Nasrullah) male line continues locally via Gr.1 winners Glass Harmonium (IRE), who stands at Blue Gum Farm in Victoria and has made a great start to his stud career and Vert de Grece (IRE), who stands in WA and also has yearlings this season, both are northern-bred sons of brief shuttler Verglas (IRE) (by Highest Honor by Kenmare).
Written Tycoon’s second dam Miss Entertainer won six races to 1400m and was out early too, running fourth in the Gimcrack Stakes-Gr.3, as would be expected of a daughter of Vain. She left 10 winners, among them the good producer Loyal Lyric (Sovereign Red), dam of Gr.1 winner Anthems (Palace Music) and second dam of Gr.1 winner Holler (Commands). Next dam Viveza is a daughter of champion sire Better Boy (IRE) (My Babu), who features in the immediate pedigrees of Slipper winners Century Miss and Full on Aces.
Capitalist’s grandsire Iglesia is another who thrived on speed, taking the Silver Slipper-Gr.2 (1100m) at Rosehill among three wins at two, when he was also third in the Todman Slipper Trial-Gr.3 and fourth in the Golden Slipper-Gr.1. He missed his entire three year-old season but bounced back at four and five to claim a further three wins, most notably in the VRC Standish Handicap-Gr.3 (1200m) at Flemington where he ran a course record 1:07.16 down the straight.
It’s hardly surprising that he could get along as his sire Last Tycoon (IRE) (Try My Best-Mill Princess by Mill Reef) won the King’s Stand Stakes-Gr.1 (5f) at Royal Ascot and the Sprint Championship-Gr.1 (5f) at York
at three, when named Europe’s Champion Sprinter and his sire won the Dewhurst Stakes-Gr.1 at two. Last Tycoon carried that speed, also evident in three wins at two in France, when he took on a crack field of milers in the US, claiming the Breeders’ Cup Mile-Gr.1.
That ability was translated into a stellar stud career with the winners of more than $143m (81SW) and he was Champion Sire in Australia in 1993-94, when his outstanding son Mahogany was carrying all before him. His Gr.1-winning son O’Reilly became a champion sire in NZ and Last Tycoon also became a champion broodmare sire. His sire, Try My Best, a brother to El Gran Senor, is by Northern Dancer from Sex Appeal (Buckpasser-Best in Show by Traffic Judge).

This is also the family of Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) whose third dam Show Lady is by Sir Ivor from Best in Show and of Xaar (Zafonic), another Dewhurst-Gr.1 winner, whose dam Monroe is a sister to Show Lady. Monroe is also third dam of Domesday, whose dam In the Past is a three-quarter sister to Xaar. Mares carrying a strain of Last Tycoon, Xaar, Redoute’s Choice or Domesday look suitable mates for Capitalist.
Iglesia’s dam Yodells won four races and was runner-up in the Wakeful-Gr.2 and third in the VRC Oaks-Gr.1 and she is a daughter of Slipper winner Marscay and the unraced Paris Review (USA) (by Cox Plate winner Noholme, a brother to Todman) mare Yodelling Lady. Yodells, who is inbred 3mx4m,5f to Star Kingdom, left six winners including Brisbane Cup-Gr.1 and Queensland Derby-Gr.1 hero Yippyio (Interstellar).
Capitalist’s dam, Kitalpha (Danzig 3fx3m), won over 1100m and she is a daughter of the $US4m yearling buy and Kentucky Derby-Gr.1 (2000m) winner Fusaichi Pegasus (Mr. Prospector-Angel Fever by Danzig), winner of six of his nine starts and sire of the winners of $131m (77SW) including the Doncaster Handicap-Gr.1-Ascot Queen Anne Stakes-Gr.1 winner and sire Haradasun (dam by Marscay). Fusaichi Pegasus has become an excellent broodmare sire, his daughters having produced nine Gr.1 winners (59SW) among winners of $161m. These include 2017 Blue Diamond Stakes-Gr.1 winner Catchy (Fastnet Rock), who has Danzig 3mx4f and a dam inbred
to Halo; the NZ Easter Handicap-Gr.1 winner Albany Reunion (Fastnet Rock), who has Danzig 3mx4f; Full of Luck (Lookin at Lucky), Mr Prospector 3mx3m, Danzig 4mx4f; Cloth of Cloud (Capital Al), Nashua 5fx5f; Silver Mountain (Silvano), We Miss Artie (Artie Schiller), Raise a Native 5mx4m,5m; Estrela Monarchos (Monarchos), Northern Dancer 4mx3f, Buckpasser 5fx4f, third dam Sex Appeal; and Hakasan (Sir Cat), Secretariat 4fx4f, Northern Dancer 4mx5m,4m, 4th dam My Charmer. It’s worth noting that Angel Fever, dam of Fusaichi Pegasus, is an RF to Almahmoud 4fx4f (Natalma-Cosmah) and is 5mx5m to the very fast Fighting Fox (Sir Galahad).
A filly bred on the reverse cross to Kitalpha, Catchy’s pedigree is worth exploring here. The second dam
of Fusaichi Pegasus is by Halo, whose dam, Cosmah, is a half-sister to Natalma (dam of Northern Dancer and third dam of Danehill) and Catchy’s dam carries a second line of Halo via a son Don’t Say Halo (USA), which could be worth considering when choosing mates for Capitalist. Kitalpha also has two lines of Danzig 3fx3m, whose sire Northern Dancer is a half-brother to Danehill’s second dam Spring Adieu, whose sire Buckpasser is also the dam sire of Try My Best.
As mentioned earlier, Capitalist’s second dam Compulsion won the Blue Diamond Preview-Gr.3 (100m) at two, her sister Merlene won the Golden Slipper-Gr.1 and AJC Sires’ Produce-Gr.1 and her half-sister Miss Pennymoney (Brocco (USA)) won the VRC Newmarket-Gr.1 and MVRC Australia Stakes-Gr.1. They are all from the leading 2YO filly of 1990-91, Bold Promise, winner of the Reisling Slipper Trial-Gr.2 at that age and a daughter of Golden Slipper winner Luskin Star. Compulsion’s four winners include the stakes winner Brayroan (Zabeel), while Bold Promise left eight winners (3SW) and her unraced daughter Shirley (Zabeel) is the dam of VRC Oaks-Gr.1 winner Dear Demi (Dehere (USA)).
Capitalist’s fourth dam, city-placed Game Dame, is a daughter of the Bold Ruler (Nasrullah) son Bold Aussie (USA) and the juvenile winner Regal Crest, a daughter of the Nasrullah grandson Sostenuto (ITY) and from VATC 1000 Guineas winner Regal Peace by Pipe of Peace (GB). She is a sister to Regal Rhythm, twice winner of the George Main Stakes among several big race wins, and to Current Affair, dam of Food For Love, winner of the Magic Night Quality-Gr.3 and dam of dual Gr.1 winner Lady Jakeo (Last Tycoon).
Bold Promise carries the half-brothers Idomeneo (GB) and Sostenuto (ITY) 3×3, both sons of English 1000 Guineas-Gr.1 third Arietta (Tudor Minstrel). Luskin Star is by Kaoru Star and from a daughter of Idomeneo, as is Confidentially, the dam of Golden Slipper winner Danzero (Danehill), a horse whose descendants could be a very good fit with Capitalist as Danzero is so closely bred to Compulsion.
Capitalist’s family is a colonial one (C56) tracing to Yatterina, a mare foaled in 1865 by Yattendon from Kohinoor by Vanguard from Kate by Gratis (GB) from Flirt by Steeltrap (GB) from Brunette by Bay Camerton (GB) from an unidentified mare. Capitalist’s branch of the family comes via the mare March (NZ) (Marble Arch (GB)-Lady Musket by Blairgowrie), who is his 11th dam.
