In a few years, Kandice Pritchard’s KBL Thoroughbreds has emerged as a serious vendor of yearlings.

In 2023, they will present their sixth draft of yearlings at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, and they’ve grown substantially from that inaugural draft of six yearlings, which included Listed placed city winner Dream Circle, who has earned nearly half a million in his six wins, more than four times his purchase price.

During their first five years of operation, they’ve sold a million-dollar yearling (now a city winner of four races who is about to make his Hong Kong debut), and several group winners, including exciting three year-old Twin Stars who won on debut at two in March 2022, then followed that up with a win in the Gr3 SAJC Sires’ Produce Stakes and second in the Gr2 SAJC Breeders’ Stakes.

We have cut back our numbers to focus on quality over quantity, which is something buyers at this sale appreciate,” said Pritchard. “The draft are all athletic horses with strong pedigrees and families to back up their type, and we specifically targeted this sale for these horses as we think they suit the market at the Gold Coast. When we started six years ago, we had a five year plan which we’ve achieved, and now we are entering into the next phase of establishing the KBL Thoroughbreds brand and product. Going forward, starting with this sale, we are putting more focus on each individual horse to ensure they get a good head start with plenty of one-on-one attention.

That’s not to say that we haven’t sold a lot of good horses before this. Cumberbatch recently won in Macau again to take his record to seven wins, and there is, of course, Twin Stars, and the unbeaten two year-old Mishani Renegade.”

From KBL Thoroughbreds 2022 Magic Millions graduates, who have only just turned two, they’ve already produced three winners including Mishani Renegade (Top Echelon) who is unbeaten in three starts this spring all in Brisbane, Harleen (Written Tycoon) who won on debut in October 2022, and Mishani Maverick (Performer) who placed in Brisbane on debut then won his second start.

KBL Thoroughbreds will present a select draft of eight yearlings at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale with an even split between proven and unproven stallions.

A half-brother to KBL Thoroughbreds’ graduate Gr3 SAJC Sires’ Produce Stakes winner Twin Stars is Lot 224, a colt by Shalaa out of Listed winner Pearl Star, from the family of Gr1 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes winner Spectatorial.

Beautifully credentialled filly, Lot 415, is a half-sister to Gr2 winner Prospective, Listed winner Josie, and to the dam of Gr1 winner Kalypso, out of imported American Listed winner Spiritied Away (Awesome Again). This filly is by first season sire Omaha Beach (War Front).

Yes Yes Yes was a boom two year-old before winning The Everest at three, and his progeny should run early, especially with pedigrees like Lot 48, as this yearling colt is out of sprint winning mare Laugh a Little (Lonhro) whose three year-old filly A Little Deep won on debut and whose two year-old ran fifth on debut recently. Laugh a Little is a half-sister to Crack Me Up who won six races, all at black type level including the Gr2 Villiers Stakes, and to Hoofit who won stakes races in both USA and New Zealand, while Laugh a Little’s dam is Listed winner Chuckle who also ran second in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic behind Lovely Jubly.

The second foal of stakes placed winner Dreams of Paris is a Merchant Navy filly, Lot 807, and her dam won four races including one at Caulfield over a mile. Her first foal is an American Pharoah two year-old colt. Dreams of Paris is a half-sister to Gr2 winner and multiple times Gr1 placed Benzini, who won eleven races, from the family of sprint star, Gr1 winner, and $1.3million earner Hot Snitzel.

Dundeel’s five Gr1 winners are all colts or geldings, and his yearling colt, Lot 639, is out of stakes placed city winner Babel (Lonhro) who has left two winners so far, and is from the family of Gr1 winner Littorio and dual Gr1 winner Seascay.

A half-sister, by All Too Hard, to group placed winner of four races is Lot 932, and her winning dam, Help (Savabeel) has also left consistent gelding Super Helpful who has won five of his 16 starts and is currently racing. This is the family of Gr1 winners Honor Babe and Kiwi Golfer.

Leading First Season Sire in 2021/22, Russian Revolution, is the sire of Lot 694, a colt whose half-sister won three races, and his dam, Calzini Bianchi is a half-sister to Champion 3YO in Singapore, Top Knight (Zoustar).

First season sire and Gr1 Doncaster winner Brutal is represented in the KBL Thoroughbreds draft by Lot 541, a colt out of young winning mare We’s Done (Commands) who is a half-sister to group winner Dynamic Love who won seven races, four as a two year-old, and to Listed winner Key Bar Nights (dam of Listed winner Barbed).

Kandice is looking forward to parading their draft in January, she is quietly confident that the KBL quality will shine through.
