In 2023, Phoenix Park will present a draft of eighteen yearlings at the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale, led by Lot 168, a half-brother to triple Derby winner Explosive Jack (Australian Derby, South Australian Derby, Tasmanian Derby), out of Listed winner Extra Explosive. This colt is one of three yearlings by Sweynesse, sire of Dragon Queen, Lucky Sweynesse, etc. Lot 66, a Sweynesse half-sister to recent stakes placed winner Nothing Compares is from a strong colonial family; and Lot 13 is a half-brother to group placed winner Guillada and group placed winner Aquamosa from the family of Champion 3YO Sprinter in Singapore Big Maverick.
From the second crop of dual Gr1 winner Ace High comes a colt, Lot 53, who is a half-brother to Gr1 Easter Handicap winner Pondarosa Miss, Listed winner and Gr1 placed Ecuador, and two stakes placed winners. This colt’s dam is a half-sister to Gr2 Waikato Gold Cup winner Bak Da Chief, dam of dual Gr1 winner Te Akau Shark.
A filly from Listed winner Nigelissima (Pentire) is Lot 372, and she has plenty of residual value, being by exciting young sire U S Navy Flag, while her dam is a three-quarter sister to Gr2 Empire Rose Stakes winner and Gr1 placed Zanna (Pentire).
Two closely related yearlings will sell in consecutive lots. The first foal of winning mare and Gr1 NZ One Thousand Guineas placed The Lustre is Lot 589, a filly by Per Incanto, sire of recent Australian Gr1 winner Roch ‘n’ Horse, while The Lustre’s half-brother is a nicely bred Ribchester colt, Lot 590. He is out of Listed winner The Pearler, who left The Lustre, Australian city winner Sky Horse (who ran fourth in the Gr3 Gunsynd Classic), as well as two other winners. This is the great ‘The’ family of The Wink, The Dimple, Irish Chance, The Grin, The Fantasy, The Phantom, The Phantom Chance etc.
Multiple Champion Sire Savabeel is represented in the Phoenix Park draft by Lot 353, a colt who is the first foal of winning mare Miss Scandinavia who is a granddaughter of Champion 2YO and 3YO in Australia, Miss Finland (dam of Gr1 winner Stay With Me, dam of Listed winner Waltz on By).
Proven sire Darci Brahma has twelve Gr1 winners, and his colt, Lot 236, is the second foal of winning High Chaparral mare High Tranquility, a half-sister to stakes placed winner Let’sdeal, from an American family that includes Champion 2YO Filly in Canada Fantasy Lake.
Almanzor made his mark early with Gr1 Victoria Derby winner Manzoice in his first crop, currently three year-olds, and his colt, Lot 135, is the first foal of an Dalghar half-sister to Listed winner Sacred Day, while this colt’s third dam is Listed winner and Gr1 placed Full Noise.
Tarzino has started his stud career well, with Gr1 Queensland Oaks winner Gypsy Goddess and Gr1 South Australian Derby winner Jungle Magnate, and his filly, Lot 234, is out of a High Chaparral mare whose first two foals to race are both winners. Her second dam is a Listed winning half-sister to Showtime, dam of Game On.
A Super Seth colt, Lot 208, is the second foal of a Fastnet Rock daughter of Gr1 Telegraph Handicap winner Guiseppina, who is out of Listed winner Battocchi.
Vinolass recently won on debut in Australia, and her half-sister by Star Witness is Lot 20. This filly’s second dam is Gr1 winner The Party Stand and this is the family of four-time Gr1 winner Callsign Mav.
A Shamus Award filly, Lot 138 is the first foal of a Lonhro mare who is a half-sister to Gr2 Great Northern Guineas winner Knight’s Tour, from a strong European family that includes Gr1 winner Laverock (Octagonal) and Pierro (Lonhro).
Two yearlings by second season sire Justify are Lot 543, a half-sister to Australian city winner French Emperor, out of stakes placed winner Special Memories (Fastnet Rock), a half-sister to Gr1 winner Unforgotten. Lot 514 is a colt out of a winning half-sister to Gr3 Desert Gold Stakes winner Showbeel, and his third dam is the dual Gr1 winner and Champion racemare Showella (dam of Champion Stayer Showcause, group winner Safwan, and Listed winner Safwa).
Phoenix Park will present two colts by Gr1 sire Vadamos whose filly La Crique won a Gr1 mile this season. Lot 324 is the second foal of a Redoute’s Choice mare from the Habibti branch of the Eight Carat family, while
Lot 577 is the third foal of a Tavistock mare who is from the family of Gr1 winners Spartacus, Blazing Speed and Laganore, as well as Gr2 winner Johan Cruyff, and Gr3 winner Meteor Shower.
