Stuart Ramsey’s Turangga Farm at Scone is renowned for its high quality yearling drafts. Stuart is a man who knows his livestock, particularly thoroughbreds and his practical knowledge is reinforced with an encyclopaedic group of pedigrees. The Turangga yearlings are always the result of cleverly planned matings combined with expert horsemanship in the way they are raised and presented.
The results are invariably outstanding, Turangga yearlings look good, they sell well and they perform with distinction on the racetrack. The 2020 draft for the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale is a small but select one which is sure to continue this fine tradition.
The four colts on offer are all by superbly credentialed Gr.1 winning sires and are out of mares by four of Australia’s best ever broodmare sires.
Lot 27 brown colt by Pierro from Life On The Edge (by Redoute’s Choice): a half-brother to the exciting John O’Shea trained three-year-old Sea Of Life who has impressed winning his last two (jumping from a maiden to a BM70 at Kensington in mid-February), he is out of a sister to the speedy stakes winner Glenall and half-sister to the triple stakes winner Panipique. His grandam is the Dermody Stakes-Gr.3, 1000m winner Our Quivira whose sister is the Toy Show Quality-Listed, 1400m winner Kishkat (dam of recent spectacular first start winner Roman Republic).
This Pierro/Redoute’s Choice cross boasts an outstanding 75% winners-to-runners strike rate with an impressive 16.6% stakes winners including three of Pierro’s six Group One winners; Levendi, Arcadia Queen and Regal Power. Another two of his Group One stars, Pinot and Pierata, boast a Nureyev cross (noting that his 3/4 brother Sadler’s Wells is Pierro’s second dam sire) as does this fellow whose sixth dam is the Rosehill Guineas-Gr.1, 1600m, dam of the stakes winner Above Deck and ancestress of the Group One gallopers Lady Of The Turf and Above Deck (the second!) and the stakes winners Hissing Sid and King Of Pain.
Stue’s comment: An outstanding colt that looks a likely type. Carries the right crosses in his pedigree to make a racehorse.
Lot 36 bay colt by Exosphere from Lonely Hour (by Fastnet Rock): by Exosphere, one of the mighty Lonhro’s finest sons, the winner of five of his ten starts including the stallion making Golden Rose Stakes-Gr.1, 1400m. Boasts crosses, within six generations, of four great stallions; Northern Dancer, Sir Tristram, Marscay and Danehill. A half-brother to the three times winner Smoodge, he is out of an unraced Fastnet Rock (already dam sire of 24 stakes winners including the Group One gallopers Santa Ana Lane, Tivaci and Gytrash) mare whose dam is the Emirates Stakes-Gr.1, 1600m winner Sky Cuddle (also winner of the Spring Stakes-Gr.3, 1200m and the Jayco Stakes-Gr.3, 1410m). That terrific mare’s four to race are all winners including the dual Group winner Champagne Cuddles whilst her unraced daughter Shantha’s Girl has produced the Group Three winner Violate. This is a family that has been producing classy performers for generations, its other members including the stakes winners Highly Recommended, Sky Love, Fast Clip, Pitstop, Adamantium, Groucho, Twilight Cove, Acecay, Bassillique, Pottinger, Undeniably and Count To Zero. This Lonhro/Fastnet Rock combination has produced the stakes winners Derryn, Rock and Serene Majesty.
Stue’s comment: A quality colt – true to type and wonderful temperament, all inherited from his great family.
Lot 140 brown colt by Medaglia d’Oro from Pop A Bottle (by More Than Ready): by a high class proven sire, he is a half-brother to the promising stakes placed three-year-old Let It Pour (a $220,000 yearling purchase) who has Alligator Blood form lines. He is just the second foal for a winning daughter of the South African Group One winner Trust Antonia, dam of the metropolitan winner Huegill who was third
in the Caulfield Guineas-Gr.1, 1600m won by Helmet. A descendant of the famed matriarch Gondolette (who is also a strong presence in Medaglia d’Oro’s pedigree), he can boast amongst his close relations the high class gallopers Successful Bidder (South African Champion Older Sprinter), Gold Flier (South African Champion 2Y0 Colt), Pedlar (South African Derby-Gr.1, 2450m) and As Ever (South African Group One winner) as well as the stakes winners Casual Jewel, Casual Diamond, Insolent, Flying Herald, Hot Seven, The Seventh Star, Seven Hero’s, Astropower, Alpha Centauri, Therealslimshady, Flirt and Flutter, Seven Pillars, Persian Lancer and Sealed With A Kiss. This Medaglia d’Oro/More Than Ready combination has produced 15 winners from just 28 runners, three of whom (11.5%) are stakes winners; and what a great broodmare sire influence More Than Ready is proving to be with his daughters already producing 95 stakes winners.
Stue’s comment: A running type of colt – and that’s from the quality of his outstanding bloodlines.
Lot 321 brown colt by Epaulette from Ancient Song (by Canny Lad): by a Golden Rose Stakes-Gr.1, 1200m winner who has made an encouraging start to his stud career (twelve stakes winners so far), he is the final foal for a terrific mare who proved her worth both on the track and in the breeding barn. The winner of nine of her 36 starts, amassing over $780,000 in stakes, she was seen at her best winning the Salinger Stakes-Gr.1, 1200m down the famous Flemington straight, also taking out the Light Fingers Stakes-Gr.2, 1200m and the June Stakes-Listed, 1100m whilst also finishing a close second to Reactive in the Oakleigh Plate-Gr.1. Ancient Song has produced four winners including the Listed winning sprinter Tampiko (won eight of 26 starts), the stakes placed War Hero and the multiple city winner Classics. This
is a real running family with Ancient Song being one of eleven winners (from twelve to race) produced by her dam Hello Lottie, also dam of the triple Listed winners Royal Loft and Danzig Beau as well as the stakes placed Great Fingall and the metropolitan winner Ancient Lights, in turn dam of the Villiers Stakes-Gr.2, 1600m and grandam of the four times Group One winner Preferment. The Commands/Canny Lad combination is an interesting one, heavy with Mumtaz Begum family influence and it has produced 12 stakes winners with a 13.9% stakes winner strike rate.
Stue’s comment: An outstanding type – this colt is the best this mare has ever produced, wonderful head and tremendous overall strength. ©
