Exceedance takes Vinery full circle. In 2018, Vinery purchased an Exceed and Excel colt from Newgate Farm’s Easter Draft and in 2023, they return to the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale with the first crop of Gr1 winner Exceedance. Exceedance is the act of exceeding a limit, and as a racehorse, he certainly achieved that with his best win coming in the time honoured Coolmore Stud Stakes-Gr1. Known as a stallion making race thanks to past winners Flying Artie, Brazen Beau, Zoustar, Star Witness, Northern Meteor, Encosta de Lago, Zeditave and Kaapstad.
Vinery’s Easter drafts continue to be a source of good racehorses with their current three-year-olds including English Riviera, winner of the 2022 MRC Thoroughbred Club Stakes-Gr3, and Gr1 winner Artorius. In 2023, Vinery will present it’s biggest draft yet of 31 yearlings by a range of stallions; All Too Hard, Deep Field, Dundeel, Exceed and Excel, Exceedance, I Am Invincible, New Bay, Pierata, Pierro, Snitzel, So You Think, Spirit of Boom, Star Turn, Toronado, Written Tycoon, and Zoustar.
First season sire and Vinery resident Exceedance is represented by a colt and filly in the Vinery draft. The colt, Lot 327, is the third foal of Gr3 Proud Miss Stakes winner Runway Star (Northern Meteor) whose first foal has won three races and her second foal placed recently. This is the family of Gr1 winner Wrap Around, Fashions Afield, and NZ Filly of the Year Imelda Mary.
Exceedance filly, Lot 240, is the second foal of tough racemare Miss Gunpowder (Pendragon) who won the MRC Thousand Guineas Prelude-Gr2 and seven other races, and her first foal was a $700k Easter purchase and has been recently placed with A Neasham. This is the family of Gr1 winner Absolut Glam.
Vinery’s Star Turn has started his career with a bang leaving Gr1 winner Startantes in his first crop. He is the sire of Lot 78, a colt out of Gr1 winner Commanding Jewel (Commands) who is a half-sister to Champion 3YO Filly Atlantic Jewel (Fastnet Rock), dam of Gr1 winner and Champion Stayer Russian Emperor. Commanding Jewel has left the four-race winner Patino Ruby, and this yearling colt is only her fourth foal. Gr1 winner I Am Excited is a member of this family.
All Too Hard always has a Gr1 winner in the headlines. Lot 350 is a quality filly with a ton of residual value, being out of Gr1 Flight Stakes placed mare Sezanne (More Than Ready) who won twice, and is a half-sister to Listed winner Grace and Harmony. This filly comes from a strong New Zealand family that includes Gr1 winners Bonneval, Champagne, Charmont, and St Reims.
Among the 31 yearlings in the Vinery Stud draft for the 2023 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale are several highlights by outside stallions, led by the Snitzel full brother, Lot 236, to this season’s group winner Letzbeglam (Snitzel-Miss Charming, by Forestry). Letzbeglam won the Gr2 Blue Diamond Prelude (f) at two, and this season has won the Gr3 Counties Bowl.
Gr1 Blue Diamond winner Artorius a spectacular first up winner of the Gr.1 Canterbury S at the Sydney Autumn Carnival. was sold by Vinery Stud and they offer his Deep Field half-brother as Lot 153. Their dam, Redoute’s Choice mare Gracie’s Lass has a 100% winner production record as a broodmare and is a half-sister to Gr1 winner Delectation, out of stakes winner and Gr1 placed Grace and Power (More Than Ready).
Champion Sprinter Santa Ana Lane’s half-sister, Lot 131, by Champion Sire I Am Invincible is sure to be sought after, and her winning dam Fast Fleet (Fastnet Rock) has left two other winners. She is a half-sister to two stakes winners from an imported American family.
Two other highlights of the Vinery draft are the two Written Tycoon yearlings out of Gr1 winning mares. Lot 292 is a Written Tycoon colt out of Coolmore Classic-Gr1 winner Plucky Belle (Mossman) whose first foal to race is a city winner of three races. This colt’s second dam is Gr2 Queensland Guineas winner Winning Belle, who placed in three Gr1 races and also left Gr1 VRC Derby placed Rawnaq and Gr1 Randwick Guineas placed Light Brigade. Lot 315 is the third foal of New Zealand One Thousand Guineas-Gr1 winner Risque (Darci Brahma) and this Written Tycoon filly comes from a strong winning New Zealand family.
