A bumper season ahead for Widden

With eleven stallions in NSW and ten in Victoria, Widden Stud has a huge range of choice for broodmare owners in 2023. Their roster is led by Zoustar (Northern Meteor) who will stand in 2023 for $220,000 thanks to the deeds of his Gr1 winners Sunlight, Zoutori, Zougotcha, Mizzy, and Lezoo. New in 2023 for Widden Stud are Gr1 winner Jacquinot (Rubick) and group winner Bruckner (Snitzel).

“Widden are excited to add Jacquinot and Bruckner to our 2023 roster,” said Widden Stud’s Matt Comerford.
Jacquinot joins fellow Gr1 Golden Rose winners Zoustar and Trapeze Artist at Widden Stud’s NSW base, as well as sire of last year’s Golden Slipper winner, Rebel Dane.

“Zoustar continues to stamp himself as an elite sire on the track and in the sales ring, and the first crop runners by Trapeze Artist and Written By are showing great promise,” added Matt.

Another Widden Stud stallion who will have his first two year-olds in 2023 is Zousain (Zoustar), his sale prices reaching $600,000 this year. The emergence of Supido, with recent three year-old stakes winners What You Need and Buenos Noches, has also resulted in a warranted increase to his service fee.

A precocious type, Jacquinot won on debut at Caulfield as a December two year-old, before being sent into group company, running fifth in the Gr3 Blue Diamond Prelude, third in the Gr1 Blue Diamond Stakes and sixth in the Gr1 Golden Slipper to finish his juvenile season with a win and a Gr1 placing from four starts.
As an early three year-old, Jacquinot won the Gr3 HDF McNeil Stakes first up, then followed this with a barnstorming win in the Gr1 Golden Rose to join a list of luminaries such as Bivouac, The Autumn Sun, Trapeze Artist, Astern, and Zoustar. Pitted against the older sprinters in The Everest, Jacquinot ran fifth in an amazing run from the rear of the field where he had to thread through traffic and still finished less than two lengths from the winner Giga Kick.

Jacquinot had one more start, then a short spell, before coming back in the summer of his three year-old season to win the Gr3 Manfred Stakes and the Gr1 CF Orr Stakes (against older horses) in succession. Two more runs where he mixed his form, like many colts, and Jacquinot was retired to stud. “Jacquinot had speed, soundness, temperament and genuine Gr1 ability. His pedigree is excellent and most importantly he had what all good stud colts have – tenacity,” said co-trainer Mick Price when Jacquinot’s retirement was announced.
By sprinter and young sire Rubick (Encosta de Lago) who has also left The Everest winner Yes Yes Yes among his nine stakes winners to date, Jacquinot is the only named foal out of his unraced dam, Ponterro (Pierro). She is superbly bred, being a sister to Gr1 winner Inference (So You Think), group winner Dragon Leap (Pierro) and Listed winner Illation (So You Think). Jacquinot’s second dam is stakes placed winner Pontiana (Redoute’s Choice), while his third dam is Listed Morphettville Guineas winner Liberty Rose (Royal Academy) who also left Listed winner Grand Jardin (Redoute’s Choice). With his fourth dam by Sir Tristram, Jacquinot’s pedigree brings a strong build up of locally successful damsires: Pierro, Redoute’s Choice, Royal Academy, and
Sir Tristram.

Breeders will have an opportunity to utilise the hugely successful bloodline of multiple Champion Sire Snitzel with recently retired Bruckner (Snitzel) who will stand at Widden Stud’s Victorian property in 2023

Bruckner made headlines in 2020 when he sold at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale for $725,000, a testament to his athletic type and superior pedigree. He showed his ability early, running third on debut as a two year-old. It was as a three year-old where Bruckner lived up to the expectations of his price and pedigree; winning first up, then running on to win the Gr3 HDF McNeil Stakes, beating the previous season’s Gr1 Blue Diamond winner Artorius, before placing in the Gr2 Danehill Stakes and the Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (behind Home Affairs). Unfortunately for his connections, he needed a knee operation after his strong sprinting effort in the Coolmore Stud Stakes, and this resulted in thirteen months off the scene, before the decision was made to retire him to stud.

Breeders looking to take a cost-effective punt on a young stallion with type, pedigree, and performance should be looking at Bruckner. His injury came just as he was on an upward path, with a second placing in the time-honoured stallion making Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes. Astern, Russian Revolution, Bivouac, Star Turn, and Foxwedge are all good stallions who placed in this race recently, while Extreme Choice ran fifth in his attempt at it.

A son of four-time Champion Sire Snitzel, whose sire sons include Shamus Award (21 stakes winners), Russian Revolution, Spill the Beans, Invader, Sizzling and Showtime, Bruckner is out of city winner Jestajingle, a half-sister to group winner Jukebox (Snitzel). This makes Bruckner a three-quarter-brother to Jukebox, while Jukebox and Jestajingle’s half-sister Molto Allegro has produced Listed winner Beethoven. Bruckner’s second and third dam are stakes winners, and he has a nice colonial build up of stallions with Snitzel, Lonhro, Rory’s Jester, and Umatilla.

Commenting on their Victorian stallions, Matt shared his belief that Brucker would be a welcome addition. “Our proven sires Nicconi, Magnus, Star Witness and Gold Standard continue to get the job done in Victoria, and we believe that the addition of Bruckner will complement our existing stallion base on the Romsey property.”

Four of Widden Stud’s exciting prospects will have their first yearlings at the sales next season; Gr3 winner Anders, Gr2 winner and Gr1 placed Dirty Work, Gr2 winner Doubtland, and dual Gr1 winner Russian Camelot.
