Cressfield

Cressfield is synonymous with quality. Every season, they bring the very best pedigreed yearlings to the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, and then those horses in turn develop into star racehorses.

To produce such consistently high-end results, year on year, is an outstanding achievement in an industry that lives and breathes the next good one.

“The decision to bring a small draft this year was a deliberate one,” said Cressfield’s Liesl Baumann. “We wanted to present our most commercial offering, a draft that is uniform and difficult to differentiate on quality. We believe that these six horses each tick all the boxes that you’d expect from an Easter yearling. They are well conformed, magnificent types. All of them by proven stallions out of young well related mares with deep pedigrees. Each one of them has all the ingredients required to light up the ring.”

VRC Oaks-G1 winner Personal (Fastnet Rock) is the latest in the long list of black type performers from Cressfield, and the mare is a representative of one of Australia’s best families with Sejardan being a recent addition to the family. Cressfield also sold the stakes placed winning siblings to Personal; Trope, and Laser Flash, while Selectify was passed in. Personal’s winning half-sister Epitomise has a yearling in this draft.

Personal, winning the VRC Oaks, Gr.1, A$1,000,000, 2500m.

From the Easter draft of just ten yearlings that produced Personal, eight are winners including Black Opal Stakes-G3 placed Cellsabeel who won as a two year-old. G1 winners Onemorenomore and Clearly Innocent were both Cressfield born and raised, as were the group winners Missrock, Headwater, Lilliburlero, Egyptian Symbol, Satin Shoes, Star Rolling, Hellfest and Jamaea.

With six yearlings in their 2022 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale draft, Cressfield will present this select offering of impressive pedigrees to buyers.

One of the picks of the entire catalogue is Lot 442, a Zoustar colt who is the first foal of Robert Sangster Stakes-G1 winner Spright (Hinchinbrook). Spright won six races, five at black type level, and was multiple times G1 placed including second in the William Reid Stakes-G1 behind Sunlight (Zoustar), and third in the Goodwood Handicap-G1 behind Despatch and Behemoth. This is a solid winning colonial family, and Spright is a half-sister to two year-old winner and group placed Mine Two, while this colt’s third dam was a winner at two as well.

“Quite simply a stunning colt out of a stunning mare. He is a radiant colour, very masculine and a lovely compact racy shape.”

The first foal of G3 winner Egyptian Symbol (Stratum) is Lot 144, a colt by Australia’s hottest sire I Am Invincible. Egyptian Symbol won eight races up to 1300m, and she raced consistently against the highest quality horses. In her win in the Toy Show-G3, G1 winner Nettoyer was third, while she ran third behind G1 winner Viddora in the Magic Millions Snippets Plate. A real speed mare, Egyptian Symbol won her first three starts, one at two, and placed behind G1 winner Single Gaze, Redzel, and Southern Legend when she was a three year-old. Out of G1 winner Egyptian Raine, Egyptian Symbol’s half-siblings Cellsabeel and Strathmore were both stakes placed. This colt is a great opportunity to buy from a strong sprinting family from a young high class racemare.

“This colt has been a standout since he was a foal. He has a fabulously strong hindquarter, thickly muscled shoulder and that trademark attractive Vinny head. He has lovely proportions which is complemented by his very neat temperament.”

A Lonhro colt, Lot 386, is an interesting prospect, being out of a French Listed winner in Rosental (Pivotal) from an Australian family, making this a fascinating combination of international damsires with colonial top line and maternal lines. This colt is the second foal of Rosental, a full sister to G3 winner Rosa Imperial, and their dam is a Kingmambo half-sister to VRC Derby-G1 winner Benicio (More Than Ready) making this colt’s third dam the Blue Diamond Prelude-G3 winner Mannington (Danehill). Mannington also left G2 winner Romneya and G3 winner Roheryn (Lonhro).

“This colt was always the colt that caught your eye in the paddock. You knew that you liked him but you couldn’t really put your finger on what it was about him, he just has a certain “look at me presence”.”

Champion Sire Fastnet Rock is emerging as a sire of sires with the likes of Foxwedge, Hinchinbrook, Smart Missile, and Rothesay, and Cressfield will offer a colt of his from the family of Kingmambo. His colt, Lot 423, is the third foal of two year-old winner and stakes placed Shrill (Shamardal), who is a half-sister to G2 winners Silkwood and Silent Honor. Dual G1 winner Old Persian (Dubawi) is a close relative. Shrill’s two year-old this season, Calico Jack, ran in the Breeders’ Plate-G3 on debut showing the big opinion his trainers have of him.

“A big raw boned colt that isn’t surprising given his genetics. By a wonderful sire, he is maturing into a real powerhouse colt.”

A colt by Champion Sire Exceed and Excel, Lot 156, is from one of Cressfield’s great families, being the second foal of winning mare Epitomise (More Than Ready). Epitomise is a half-sister to Cressfield’s VRC Oaks-G1 winner Inglis Easter graduate Personal, as well as stakes placed winner Selectify and Laser Flash, and a full sister to G2 placed winner Trope (More Than Ready). The dam of Personal and Epitomise is Listed winner Personify (Galileo) who is one of five stakes winners for her group winning dam Procrastinate. Epitomise’s first foal is a two year-old, Touch of Navy, who ran fourth on debut recently.

“A more elegant style of colt, he has a lovely balance and symmetry to him.”

The only filly, Lot 24, is by emerging top class sire Zoustar and is the third foal of tough sprinting mare Wild Rain (Manhattan Rain) who won the MVRC Ian McEwen Stakes-G2 and seven other races, as well as being G1 placed in the AJ Moir Stakes behind Extreme Choice and Heatherly. Wild Rain’s two year-old trialled recently for trainers Richard and Michael Freedman. This is the family of Horse of the Year Northerly, and recent group winning three year-old Overpass.

“Really stamped by Zoustar her sire, this filly is all class. She has terrific depth to her hindquarter and takes on a real athletic shape.”

With pedigrees filled with G1 class and residual value and a farm that produces G1 quality racehorses on a regular basis, there is a lot to like about the Cressfield draft this year.
