In 2023, Goodwood Farm will offer seven yearlings by seven exciting stallions. With their Gr1 record, this is a must-inspect draft, especially the Extreme Choice colt who has only forty-one live foals in this crop of yearlings.

Murrurundi’s Goodwood Farm has fashioned a strong record of quality graduates over the years with the likes of Private Eye, Flying Artie, and Manawanui all coming from their paddocks. The biggest return has to go to Gr1 Epsom winner Private Eye was a $62,500 Magic Millions graduate, and has gone on to win over $6.2million from his ten wins to date, most recently running second in the 2022 The Everest and winning the 2022 Nature Strip Stakes. Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale graduate The Astrologist has earnings over $1.2million and is a group winner and multiple time Gr1 placed. Goodwood Farm sold him in 2018 for $150,000, a strong return for his breeder and for his racing owners.

Extreme Choice has been a sensation with Golden Slipper winner Stay Inside, and Gr1 winner She’s Extreme from very few foals. His colt, Lot 500, is the first foal of winning mare Trestrail (Sebring) who is out of a half-sister to Gr1 winner Desert Eagle who was rated both Horse of the Year and the Champion Sprinter in Hong Kong with many of the races he won in Hong Kong now upgraded to Gr1 level.

Tough race mare and Gr3 Rotorua Cup winner Fromelles (Savabeel) has a Merchant Navy colt, Lot 1100, in this draft. Fromelles has left two winners, and she is a daughter of Gr1 placed winner Unearthed, from the family of Japanese Gr1 winner Chrysoberyl and Marialite.

A Deep Field colt, Lot 67, is out of winning mare Lindy Lou (Fastnet Rock) whose first foal is a winning full brother to this yearling, and her second foal was placed recently at three. Lindy Lou is a half-sister to Listed Gosford Guineas winner Cent Per Cent, who won eight races and ran fourth in the Gr1 TJ Smith Classic, and to stakes placed winner Minnie Mah.

Gr1 winner Vadeni’s sire Churchill is represented by a colt, Lot 1015, who is the first foal of winning mare Araucaria (Hinchinbrook), who is a half-sister to Listed winner Calchris, dam of Listed winner Calcatta, dam of stakes winners Tanker and Lady Naturaliste.

Like most Golden Slipper winners Capitalist has been an excellent stallion with Gr1 winner Captivant in his first crop. His filly, Lot 1135, is the first foal of a half-sister to Listed winner Ever The Same, from the Redoute’s Choice family.

First season sire and tough Gr1 winning racehorse Pierata is represented by Lot 925, a colt, whose winning dam Harlem Shuffle is a half-sister to two year-old Listed winner Harlem River, the dam of stakes placed two year-old winner Lady Harlem. Harlem Shuffle has left two winners to date including Harlem Groove who won on debut as a two year-old.

Headwater colt, Lot 1263, is out of a young Lonhro mare, Still Cool, who is a three-quarter sister to group winner Renaissance and Sessions (also third in the Gr1 Manikato Stakes) and Listed winner Haunted. This is a similar to cross to Headwater’s stakes winner Starlight (who is out of a Zabeel mare).

Dance Hero and Private Eye.

When assessing breeding which influences/key horses do you mainly look for?
Conformation.

Do you still get butterflies as your yearling enters the ring?
No. I never have. I get a lot of satisfaction if a horse ends up with the right person, someone who will suit the yearling.

What makes Magic Millions at the Gold Coast such a success?
Everyone is in holiday mode. It’s the first sale of the season. Hopefully buyers have a pocketful of money. Everyone is feeling good, it’s a happy sale.
