We win together. That’s the philosophy at Rosemont Stud. The beautiful riverside yearling paddocks at the Victorian property have been used to grow out a host of GR1 stars such as Magic Millions graduates Krone and Mr Quickie, as well as Bella Nipotina, Starspangledbanner, Santa Ana Lane, and Ruthven. Recent Magic Millions Gold Coast drafts have yielded horses such as this season’s Gr2 winning three year-old North Star Lass, and three year-old Listed placed Rampant Lion, as well as Gr3 winner Chica Fuerte, Gr3 winner Rimraam, group placed winners Butter Blonde, Marsannay, Return With Honour, and Wanalirri. Rosemont Stud’s Ryan McEvoy had a chat about their 2023 Magic Millions draft.

Rosemont Stud will present a draft of 17 yearlings at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, led by their resident sire Shamus Award who has two yearlings on offer. Lot 330 is the fifth foal of winning mare Sardaaj, who almost won the Gr1 Levin Classic, from the family of Gr1 winner Begood Toya Mother. Sardaaj is a daughter of stakes placed winner Sardonyx, and her first foal, Starosa has won five races. A Shamus Award colt, Lot 529, is out of winning mare Vivacity, who is a half-sister to stakes placed winner O’Malley, from the family of recent good two year-old Kinky Boom.

A pair of I Am Invincible colts are bound to be popular with buyers, given how hot their sire is, and the half-brother to two stakes winners, Lot 289, is only the fifth foal for winning mare Reign. Her first three foals are winners, including Listed winner of seven races Gold Tail, and Listed winner of three races Sopran Ival. Reign is herself a half-sister to group winner Brooklyn Hustle, out of Listed winner Joint Aspiration. The other colt, Lot 503, is the second foal of group placed winner True Excelsior, who ran fourth in the Gr1 Robert Sangster Stakes, is a half-sister to three other stakes horses and this colt is from the stallion making Diamond Lover/Eight Carat family.

Rosemont Stud sold North Star Lass (Zoustar) and they present her three-quarter-sister, Lot 374, by first season sire Zousain (Zoustar), and both are out of group placed winner of five races, Sheila’s Star (Snitzel), who is a half-sister to Listed winner Jacqueline Rouge, a daughter of Gr3 Blue Diamond Preview winner Northeast Sheila.

Beauty Generation was recently twice Horse of the Year in Hong Kong, and winner of eight Gr1 races among his 20 wins. His half-sister by Exceed and Excel, Lot 435, is out of a half-sister to stakes winners Victory Trump and Savage Attack.

The first foal of Bim Bam Boom, a half-sister to Gr1 winner Albany Reunion, and Listed winner Fast Dragon, is a filly, Lot 664, by first season sire Exceedance. Giannis, a winner last season in the Listed Dulcify Stakes and previously second in the Gr1 JJ Atkins Plate is out of Bim Bam Boom’s stakes placed winning half-sister.

Pierro filly, Lot 142, is a granddaughter of Champion race mare and four-time Gr1 winner Princess Coup, who has been an excellent broodmare, leaving group winners Argentia and Thewizardofoz, as well as the winning dam of group placed winner Key. This filly is the first foal of her dam, Mistress Oz (Snitzel).

Need a colt from a stallion’s family? Lot 654 is by So You Think, and his dam Bellwether is a half-sister to Gr1 winner Mirage Dancer and Listed winner Ironclad, out of dual Gr1 winner Heat Haze. Heat Haze is one of seven stakes winners for her Listed winning dam, including Champion Sire Dansili, Gr1 winner Banks Hill (dam of two stakes winners), Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf winner Intercontinental, Gr1 winner Cacique, and Horse of the Year in Canada Champs Elysees. Bellwether has already left two winners of six races.

A half-brother, by Brazen Beau, to Gr3 Blue Diamond Prelude placed Unstoppabelle, Lot 769, is out of winning mare Darcibelle, who is a half-sister to Gr2 VRC Sires’ Produce winner Twilight Royale. Capitalist’s colt, Lot 294, is the second foal of winning mare Riddling Miss who is a half-sister to Japanese stakes winner Admire Hokuto, from the Typhoon Tracy family.

Anamoe’s sire Street Boss has a nicely bred colt, Lot 653, and he is the first foal of six-race winning mare Belle Danseuse, who is a half-sister to Gr2 Blue Diamond Prelude winner Letzbeglam and stakes placed winner Snazz ‘n’ Charm from the family of Gr1 winner Tout Charmant.

The first foal of five-race winner Filibuster, Lot 865, is a Calyx filly, and Filibuster is a full sister to Listed winner Moonlover from the family of Champion 3YO Miler in Germany, Emerald Commander.

Other sires represented are Deep Field (Lot 946), Pierata (Lot 549), Starspangledbanner (Lot 209), and Yes Yes Yes (Lot 460).

What is the best horse you have sold through Magic Millions?
Rosemont have enjoyed great success with our Magic Millions draft and Dual Gr1 winner MR QUICKIE (Shamus Award) would have to be our best performed graduate. Bought by Wylie Dalziel Syndications for $115,000, he won the Gr1 Queensland Derby and came back as a four year-old to win the Gr1 Toorak Hcp in dominant fashion.

When assessing breeding which influences/key horses do you mainly look for?
Principally, sticking to the fundamentals. Start with a good physical mare preferably with race performance. Make a shortlist of stallions that suit her from a physical and pedigree perspective. Ultimately, if you breed a good quality physical with high class race performance on the pedigree page, it is as good a start as any.

Do you still get butterflies as your yearling enters the ring?
Absolutely. When a yearling walks into a sales ring, for a breeder, that is the culmination of almost three years of planning. Planning the mating, foaling down the mare, raising the foal, determining a sale, preparing for sale etc. It’s a big deal regardless of what level one is selling at.

Where is the most unusual place you’ve visited?
Kathmandu. And whilst not ‘unusual’ these days, hoping to trek the Kokoda Trail sometime in the next twelve months.

Do you prefer fishing or football, details please.
Having grown up in a football town and playing it, would have to say footy for now but ask me again in ten years time – suspect the answer may be different!

What would you do if you sold a yearling for $10 million?
Invest in more yearlings…naturally!
