Pencarrow Stud rose to the challenge of the pandemic, supporting New Zealand Bloodstock with bigger than usual drafts, and the results from those offerings in 2021 are now three year-olds who have started their racing careers. From that 2021 draft, Kazalark (Vadamos) was sold to Australia, where he won at Hawkesbury at just his second start, then ran second in the Gr3 Spring Stakes at start number three. He looks like a horse on the improve, as does Stella Splendida (Zoustar) who won on debut and most recently ran in the Gr3 Soliloquy Stakes at only her third start. Both Dunkel and Stonybreck won on debut, while Opito Ballerina won in Australia at her third start.

“Now that the borders are open again, we’ve gone in a slightly different direction for the 2023 draft. We have put together a strong draft of yearlings that includes many yearlings from top mares that we raced, probably with more yearlings from good racemares than we’ve offered in the past. Mares like Guiseppina, Supera, Sleeping Beauty, Silver Eclipse, Dolmabache, and Wild Flower all raced in Pencarrow Stud’s ownership and now they are young mares with foals in our draft. It’s a good opportunity to buy into our best families, commented stud manager Leon Casey.”
In 2023, Pencarrow Stud will present a draft of 23 yearlings at the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale. Pencarrow Stud raced Guiseppina, a mare with a brilliant turn of foot, who beat two subsequent Gr1 winners at her second start when breaking her maiden. After a long layoff with injury, she returned to win the Gr1 Telegraph Handicap over a mile winning a total of six races in her career, and her Snitzel colt is Lot 221. Pencarrow Stud have previously only offered two of her six earlier foals at auction, passing in Peppino (who is now an unraced broodmare) and selling her current three year-old Tavi Time in 2021 for $60,000.
The Ethereal family is a foundation family for Pencarrow Stud, and they have several yearlings from different branches of this family on offer in 2023. A colt with a stallion’s pedigree is Lot 145, by Champion Sire Written Tycoon, out of Gr2 winner and Gr1 placed Dolmabache (Redoute’s Choice) who has already left two winners from as many to race. Dolmabache is a sister to group winner Pure Elegance, and a half-sister to Listed winner Cote d’Or. Dolmabache’s dam is a full sister to Gr1 winner Grand Echezeaux (dam of Gr1 winner Darci Brahma) and a half-sister to group winner Romanee Conti (dam of Ethereal). Lot 112 is a Super Seth colt out of Listed winner Cote d’Or, the half-sister to Dolmabache; while Lot 567, a filly by U S Navy Flag, is the first foal of Gr2 winner and Gr1 placed Supera (Savabeel), who is a half-sister to group winner Eleonora (dam of recent Listed winner Ethereal Star), while this filly’s third dam is Champion Stayer Ethereal. Pencarrow Stud bred and sold successful sire Darci Brahma from the Ethereal family and in 2023, they will present two of his yearlings; Lot 535 is a Darci Brahma colt who is the second foal of an unraced O’Reilly mare, who is the daughter of Gr2 winner Santagostino; while Lot 190 is a colt who is the first foal of winning mare Flourishing, a daughter of Lafleur, thus bringing together two of Pencarrow’s top families.
The Habibti branch of the Eight Carat family has been nurtured by Pencarrow Stud after they imported her winning daughter Desert Lily, who left Gr2 winner Lafleur for Pencarrow’s racing team. Lafleur has been an excellent broodmare leaving Gr3 winner Amaryllis and Listed winner Papilio. Yearlings from this family on offer in 2023 include the aforementioned Lot 190, as well as Lot 638, a Super Seth colt who is the third foal of Listed winner and Gr1 placed Wildflower, and this colt carries close inbreeding to two super stallions in Danehill and Zabeel. First season sire and Champion Sprinter Blue Point has a filly, Lot 357, out of winning Zabeel mare Mojave Aster, a full sister to Gr2 winner Lafleur.
Gr1 winner Tis Juliet’s imported daughter Dance My Dance left Gr2 winner Rasa Lila and Gr3 winner Posavina. Posavina’s excitingly bred colt, Lot 433 is by first season sire Too Darn Hot, making him a half-brother to stakes placed winner Podravina. Lot 308 is a Vadamos filly who is the first foal of a Snitzel half-sister to both Rasa Lila and Posavina.
Another stallion prospect is the Savabeel colt, Lot 495, who is out of Gr3 winner Scintillula who was multiple times Gr1 placed and this colt is a full brother to Gr2 placed winner Butter Chicken.
First season sire and Gr1 Caulfield Guineas winner Super Seth is represented by five yearlings in the Pencarrow Stud draft and all five are out of stakes class mares, with both Lot 112 and 638 mentioned earlier. Lot 526 is a filly, the first foal of Gr3 winner Sleeping Beauty, who is a half-sister to two stakes horses and the dam of Gr1 winner Herculian Prince. Another filly, Lot 520, is the third foal of Listed winner Silver Eclipse who is a daughter of Gr3 winner Zino Belle and this filly’s first four dams are all stakes winners. The fifth Super Seth yearling is Lot 253, a filly, out of Gr2 placed winner Irion whose first two foals are now winners with Pearl of Alsace winning on debut recently. Irion is a half-sister to Gr1 placed Octapussy (dam of three stakes winners), and to the winning dam of Gr3 winner Valpolicella.
A half-brother to Gr3 winner Lilikoi is Lot 58, and this Exceed and Excel colt is out of a winning half-sister to Gr2 winner Requinto, while his second dam is Champion 2YO Filly and Gr1 winning juvenile Damson.
The Pierro colt, Lot 75, is out of an imported winning Sea the Stars mare, and is her third foal. His dam is a daughter of Gr2 winner Kitty Matcham, one of five group winners for dual Gr1 winner Imagine.
Ocean Park has had a great season in Australia with Gr1 stars Tofane and Kolding, and his colt, Lot 327, is the third foal of tough racemare Makarska who won six races, and is a half-sister to Gr3 SAJC RA Lees Stakes winner Rhythm To Spare.
Eminent (Frankel)’s second crop colt, Lot 287, is out of winning mare La Adelita, a half-sister to Listed winner and Gr1 placed two year-old Rocanto, from the family of Gr1 winner Reigning to Win; while Lot 410 is a Vadamos filly out of a More Than Ready daughter of Gr1 winner Insouciant. Almanzor filly, Lot 481, is out of stakes placed winner Santangelo (Lonhro), a half-sister to Listed winner Kolonel Kev.
Lot 193 is a U S Navy Flag filly and she is the second foal of an imported Fastnet Rock mare who is closely related to group winner One Foot in Heaven, a daughter of Gr1 Hong Kong Cup winner Pride. Gr1 One Thousand Guineas winner Speciosa is also from this family.
2023 is an opportunity to buy yearlings out of Pencarrow Stud’s quality racing team, with yearlings on offer closely related to some of the best Australasian gallopers of recent years. It’s an opportunity not to be missed.
