The Coolmore circle of success
Glancing through the 43 strong draft Coolmore will take to Riverside, one can’t help but be struck by two things. The first is the pure quality of the 14 youngsters by American Triple Crown winner Justify. The other is just how many of the yearlings within the consignment carry the blood of horses that were either part of a previous Coolmore draft or were raised on their lush Jerry’s Plains paddocks and sold by long time clients.
Amongst a handful of examples of the circle of success is Lot 86. Dr Denis O’Brien bred the High Chaparral filly that would race as Bring Me Roses, and she was raised at Coolmore before winning the Edward Manifold Stakes-G2 and being placed second in both the G1 VRC Oaks and the Empire Rose Stakes. Now her first foal, a Fastnet Rock filly, comes to Riverside having had an identical upbringing.
The same can be said for the second foal out of the Chairman’s Stakes-G3 winner Ennis Hill (Fastnet Rock). This daughter of Justify is Coolmore born and raised just like her dam, as is the second foal out of the four time Group winner Formality who has a Justify colt this time. There is also a Fastnet Rock full brother to the nine-time G1 winner Avantage, another star born at Coolmore.
Since it was announced Justify would be shuttling to Australia the local market has been patiently waiting for the chance to buy his best….
The same can be said of the progeny of the G3 winner and grand producer Musidora (Rock Of Gibraltar) who has a Pierro colt sell as Lot 312. Her Group winning daughters Tulip (Pierro) and Sacred Eye (High Chaparral) were both raised on the farm as was Sacred Eye’s Justify filly who will sell at Easter as Lot 396. Another Justify with a proven connection to Coolmore is the filly out of the Edward Manifold Stakes-G2 winner Fontein Ruby (Turffontein). Her Fastnet Rock half-sister Parure was born on the farm and later won the Autumn Classic-G2.
And the results have kept rolling in this season. The juvenile Stakes winning filly in New Zealand Bright Blue Sky is a Coolmore graduate, and her American Pharoah half-sister will go through as Lot 77. Another long term client of the farm is Robert McLure who bred this season’s Pierro Plate winner Mumbai Jewel (I Am Invincible) with her Zoustar half-sister ready to carry hip number 308.
Since it was announced Justify would be shuttling to Australia the local market has been patiently waiting for the chance to buy his best, and of course being the Easter Sale these are the premium Justifys that head to Riverside. All will be extremely popular and all offer the promise of a glistening new Ferrari in the garage for one lucky buyer.
Lot 258 is an interesting colt offering a cross of the blood of Scat Daddy through Justify with that of Pins in the mare Legless Veuve who in turn is out of an O’Reilly mare. The list of Group winners on the page is long, his dam being a dual G3 winner who is a sister to the Mannerism Stakes-G3 winner Tootsie
and to the dam of the New Zealand Oaks-G1 winner Savvy Coup (Savabeel). And if you like your form more recent then this is the family of four time G1 winner Probabeel (Savabeel) and this season’s Flight Stakes-G1 winner Never Been Kissed (Tivaci).
A Justify that typifies the quality he has stamped his stock with is Lot 62. He is the last foal out of the tremendous four-time G1 winner Atlantic Jewel, dam of the G3 Royal Ascot winner Russian Emperor and a three-quarter sister to the Thousand Guineas-G1 winner Commanding Jewel (Commands). The same can be said of Lot 219, a filly first foal of the Euclase Stakes-G2 winner I’ll Have A Bit (Smart Missile), and for those who harbour thoughts of a Classic winner then his colt first foal, Lot 405, out of the Savabeel mare Savapinksi, winner of the Matriarch Stakes-G2 is certainly one to inspect. Or if having the blood of Galileo in a pedigree is your fancy then Lot 61 is a Justify filly out of a Galileo full sister to the Listed winner in Ireland Emperor Of The Sun and a half-sister to our own Zoustar.
The rest of the draft is littered with potential stars, like Lot 180, the only Churchill in the sale and a half-brother to the G1 winning sprinter Bella Vella (Commands) from a very fast American family. Interestingly he shares the mare Take A Stand (Amerigo) as a common ancestor with Lot 284, an American Pharoah colt out of Milseain. Milseian was third in the New Zealand Oaks-G1 and is a Tavistock full sister to Hong Kong Horse of the Year Werther, the Australasian Oaks-G1 winner Toffee Tongue and the New Zealand Cup-G3 winner Gobstopper. Or if you are looking for a potential sire then Lot 111 is a Fastnet Rock colt out of the twice winning Ciarlet, a full sister to Zoustar.
The two things all these yearlings will have in common is firstly they will carry the Coolmore touch, which history says has to be an advantage, and secondly, should the purchaser wish when their racing days are done, they could choose to return to their stock to Jerry’s Plains to start the next round in the circle of success.
